According to reports in Monday’s Daily Star newspaper former Manchester United and England superstar David Beckham’s plans of a £200 million MLS franchise is over, after his biggest backer has withdrawn his support.

Mayor of Miami Carlos Gimenez was a leading campaigner in the 39-year-olds desire to bring an MLS team to South Florida backing Beckham’s plans to build a new stadium in the City.

Yesterday however he blasted the former England captains plan as not being good enough for his city complaining about the lack of progress, he said: “They haven’t really told me where and what their plans are.

“I told them: ‘Why don’t you go and do your due diligence and come back when you’re ready’.

“That hasn’t happened yet.”

Meanwhile Major League Soccer commissioner Don Garber has told him this lack of progress “can’t go on forever”.

He added: “If we don’t have the right stadium, we’re not going to Miami, nor should we go to any market without the right stadium.”

Trouble started for Beckham after he announced he wanted to build a 40,000 seat stadium in the Port of Miami only to come up against opposition from the cruise ship industry a major employer in the City.

Beckham may now have to shelve his plans for Miami, but is sure to find another City especially in the Southeast of the United States that will welcome him with open arms as the MLS seeks to locate a team south of Washington D.C.
