The operation was linked to the chronic bowel condition that threatened to end the 28-year-old midfielder’s career.

The Scot made his comeback after 11 months out in September and has made just two substitute appearances since starting the Premier League win at Reading on December 1.

A United statement read: “This was a planned procedure. While it is frustrating for both Darren and the club that he won’t be able to contribute further during this campaign, this decision has been taken in the best interests of his long-term health.

“We look forward to him returning next season with this problem firmly behind him.”
