The European champions sacked Di Matteo just hours after their 3-0 UEFA Champions League defeat to Juventus which leaves them in danger of going out in the group stages.

Rafa Benitez is the early front-runner to replace Roberto Di Matteo as Chelsea boss.

With former Barcelona chief Pep Guardiola unwilling to cut short his 12-month sabbatical from the game, the first choice is Benitez.

Sky Sports sources believe that talks have already taken place, and it is understood Chelsea want their new coach – be it interim or not – in place before this weekend’s top-of-the-table clash with Manchester City.

52-year-old Benitez has been out of work since leaving Inter Milanin 2010 after he spent just six months at the San Siro.
