It would appear that both Manchester United and Chelsea would like to sign Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, and after hearing about Manchester United’s interest in the French international, Blues boss Jose Mourinho has upped the ante and is willing to offer Los Blanco’s £39.4 million after reports in Spain say Chelsea have decided to make him a top summer target.

Manchester United has the financial backing to compete with Mourinho over the 21-year-old, but seeing as it was Mourinho who signed the central-defender from French Ligue 1 side Lens in 2011 for 10€ million the Portuguese manager my hold some sway over the young Frenchman who he sees as a replacement for 34-year-old John Terry.
