After having been sacked by Real Madrid last summer Carlo Ancelotti was approached by Liverpool last week to see if he was interested in the Merseyside vacancy following the departure of Brendan Rodgers.

The 56-year-old Italian declined the offer while at the same time also distancing him from his former club Chelsea who are struggling under Jose Mourinho despite winning the Premier League title last season telling Italian media: “Mourinho will continue to do his job. I don’t think Chelsea want a change. In any case my idea continues to be to remain away from work for a year.”

The Champions League winning manager also turned down the chance to take over AC Milan after having been offered the job in the summer citing exhaustion following two gruelling seasons in Spain.

“Real is very consuming. Had it been another time, I would have returned to AC Milan,” he said.

“After my cervical stenosis operation, I am enjoying my holidays. I am rediscovering the pleasures of being a normal person. You live better without pressure.”
