Arsenal appear to have suffered a setback in their search for a centre-back after Celtic manager Ronny Deila confirmed that Holland U-21 centre-back Virgil van Dijk will not be allowed to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has had scouts tracking the former Groningen player all season and was thought ready to make a move for the Dutchman.

Speaking ahead of Celtic’s trip to Kilmarnock Deila told talkSPORT: “Hopefully we’ll have a good January transfer window and we’ll be strong going into the second part of the league.

“Our aim is to keep the players here so we have consistency and to get in players who will make the squad better.”
