Arsenal have made one step closer in their quest to sign Porto striker Jackson Martinez after their main rival in the affair AC Milan announced the sacking of manager Filippo Inzaghi.

The 41-year-old former striker managed just one season at the San Siro as boss, leading AC Milan to a disappointing 10th place finish in Serie A.

Before this announcement the Italian giants were believed to be on the verge of signing the 28-year-old Colombian hit-man, but all bets are now off following this latest development and that fact that Martinez distanced himself from AC Milan yesterday in an interview with Portugal sports newspaper A Bola saying: “I’m as close to Milan as I am to other clubs.

“I will decide my future in the next few days.”

Martinez is for the moment focused on the Copa America, and probably will not decide his future until the tournament is over, but this news has to be good for Arsenal.
