Yesterday we all saw the news linking Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema to Arsenal with Metro going so far as to say the 27-year-old will undergo a medical in London on Monday before being revealed to the fans Monday evening ahead of the clash with Liverpool.

To make this news sound even more likely of happening, the Sunday Star is this morning reporting that Arsenal will offer Real Madrid £50 million for the French international within the next 48 hours.

This figure they say will meet Madrid’s valuation and make Benzema the clubs biggest ever signing eclipsing the £42 million they paid for Mesut Ozil two seasons ago.

Just last week Benzema made it clear to everyone that he was happy in the Spanish capital, and had no desire to leave, but the Star reports an insider at the Santiago Bernabeu telling them: ‘‘It’s up to Arsenal to fight for Karim with a big offer.

“Then he could be their player in this window.”

Before you start to get excited that this deal could possibly happen, please bear in mind that Manchester United is also desperate for a goal scorer as Saturdays 0-0 result against Newcastle at Old Trafford proved, and should manager Louis van Gaal hear that Real Madrid is ready to sell Benzema, do you honestly think he would stand idly by and let him join the Gunners without making a bid?

Arsenal needs a striker, but whether or not it will be Benzema remains to be seen.
