The Manchester United squad player Bébé has joined the Portuguese side Rio Ave on loan. “I’m fully prepared to play and happy to wear the jersey of Rio Ave FC. I’ll give everything,” he told the club website. “I’ve come here to show what I’m worth.”

The 22-year-old striker, who was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson for £7.4m from Guimarães in August 2010 – three months after he was offered to PSV for nothing by his agent when out of contract at Estrela – had an unsuccessful spell on loan at Besiktas last season.

He then tore his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Portugal’s Under-21 side. “Obviously something went wrong in the last phase of my career – I had a serious injury which thankfully has recovered well,” he said. “I’m fine physically, I was always training and playing.”

He played seven times for United, scoring twice. Rio Ave are fifth in the Portuguese top flight, 14 points adrift of the leaders Benfica, and resume at home to Sporting Lisbon on Saturday following the winter break.
