Barcelona are stepping up their pursuit of Alex Song despite Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger insisting the player is staying put.

Barca step up Song bid

Speculation has been mounting that the Catalan giants want to take the midfielder to the Nou Camp this summer but Wenger yesterday insisted no contact has been made.

Wenger also says he has no intention of selling the player, who still has three years to run on his current deal, but that has not deterred Barca and they are still keen to do a deal.

Reports claim Barca vice-president Josep Maria Bartomeu was in London yesterday to open talks over a proposed £12million move and it looks as though Arsenal face another fight to keep one of their star players.

Meanwhile Song’s international team-mate Carlos Kameni has claimed the player has set his heart on a move to Barca.

“We were together on holiday and he said he wants to go to Barcelona,” Kameni told Portuguese newspaper Abola. “Everyone wants to play for Barcelona. Song would fit right in at Barcelona. He has all the qualities to play there.

“He is like Yaya Toure, but with more responsibility. He’s doing well. He works hard and is the complete player.”
