In what could be a huge blow for Arsenal Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal is lining up a bid for Southampton defensive midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin according to Mondays Daily Mirror.

The French international made it clear weeks ago that he would leave St Mary’s if he was given the option of being able to play Champions League football at another club, something both United and Arsenal can offer the 25-year-old.

The plan from Arsenal’s perspective was to build the clubs Premier League title challenge around the £25 million rated player, who Arsenal manger Arsene Wenger had made his N0.1 summer priority signing.

Meanwhile Dutchman van Gaal is aware that the Red Devils struggled last season when they were without Michael Carrick in the team, and now wants to make sure he has not only a back-up defensive midfielder, but a player who is capable of taking over from the aging England international.

In the end Arsenal may still get their man, but it could cost them more than they were hoping to pay.
