According to the Sunday Mirror Chelsea is lining up Atletico Madrid trainer Diego Simeone should they decide to ditch current boss Jose Mourinho after the clubs worst start to a season in 37-years.

For now at least club owner Roman Abramovich is sticking with the Portuguese manager but there is no knowing how much longer the triggers happy Russian billionaire is willing to wait after having watched his league winning team win just two of their last eight matches.

Sources in Portugal say that Mourinho is aware that Chelsea is making moves behind the scenes, and are working on a plan to replace him should this run of poor form continue.

Top of the list of possible new managers is 48-year-old Argentinian trainer Diego Simeone, who despite not having the financial resources of Real Madrid and Barcelona managed to take Atletico to the Champions League final in 2014 while also winning La Liga.

Simeone however has just signed a new five-year contract back in March that contains a £15 million buyout clause, which means that should Chelsea fire Mourinho it will cost the club a small fortune after the special one signed a new four-year £30 million contract during the summer.

Time will tell on this one, but given the strength of player Mourinho has available to him, it would be hard not to envision him turning the team’s fortunes around.
