As Chelsea prepares to up their offer for Everton defender John Stones, Toffee’s boss Roberto Martinez is making plans of his own, by reportedly preparing a £10 million bid for Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk, according to the Daily Mail.

The Spanish manager has already lost both Antolin Alcaraz and Sylvain Distin during the current transfer window, and is now desperate to sign a central defender.

He said: “Our squad is not complete. We are still looking for two positions and we need to make sure they fit exactly in the group in the manner we want and expect as footballers and people.

“Central defence is one of those positions. Two experienced centre-halves left the squad, so we need to fill those gaps.”
