Arsenal’s possibility of signing a striker in the foreseeable future looks improbable at best after the signing of Danny Welbeck on transfer deadline day, although such assertion is not cast on stone the picture points to such scenario, but the question is could there be an intervening factor that would shape a particular transfer in the coming transfer window or next summer?

This question is necessary when the reasons why Arsenal could sign Edinson Cavani are considered.

Firstly, so far the Uruguay striker has refused to sign a new contract offered him by Paris Saint-Germain.

The 27 year old former Napoli striker is thought to be seeking assurance in respect of the position he currently occupies.

When Zlatan Ibrahimovic has played, Cavani plays mostly played from the wings, and while he featured mostly from the left wing last season, he has been deployed mostly on the right wing this season.

If the contract situation becomes long and drawn out, PSG are expected to seek a solution one way or the other.

Secondly, Arsene Wenger continues to be a big admirer of the Uruguayan hit man.

According to reports, he considered moving for him before he left Napoli to PSG in the summer of 2013.

That admiration could rekindle another interest in the 6ft 3in powerhouse if his situation at the Parisian club becomes untenable.

Thirdly, the future of Lukas Podolski as an Arsenal player would become clearer next summer.

There are indications that the German would leave the club because of a lack of playing time.

He was on the verge of leaving this summer, until Oliver Giroud’s injury meant he had to stay back.

When he leaves, he has to be replaced, and Edinson Cavani could be that replacement as Danny Welbeck could be used in as an inverted winger if the Uruguayan is signed.

Fourthly, another disappointing season could force the club’s hand to move for a striker that fully fits the bill of a world class striker.

And Edinson Cavani falls into that category.

Last season, Arsenal’s poor offensive potential cost it dearly, though that seems to have been addressed by several signings this summer, if those signings falls short, Arsene Wenger could move for a natural goal scorer in the Uruguayan striker.

The fifth reason why he could join Arsenal is UEFA’s Financial Fair Play rule.

The sanctions played on the Parisian seriously hampered their transfer dealings this summer, and it is expected to be reviewed again next summer.

If the French champions fall short of the rule once again, which looks likely, they are expected to sacrifice some key players and Edinson Cavani could be one of the players that could go, just as Manchester City allowed Alvaro Negredo to join Valencia on loan because of FFP rules.
