Arsenal is quietly watching Schalke’s Benedikt Howedes with an eye to signing him in January to play alongside friend Per Mertesacker in the Gunners back four.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger likes the 26-year-old versatility with him being equally at home playing either left-back or centre-half.
Gunner’s scouts were on hand to watch the German international help Schalke to an impressive 4-0 win over Stuttgart last week, and with Arsenal now through to the knock out stage of the Champions League Howedes could prove to be a shrewd buy.
With two years remaining on his current contract with Schalke, it would cost Arsenal around £15 million to get him to move to north London, a figure which should not dissuade Wenger from signing him.
