Arsenal has now given up the need to sign a defensive midfielder this summer after 33-year-old Spaniard Mikel Arteta agreed to stay at the Emirates one more year.

There were fears that Arteta was about to quit the club this summer following a season that saw him spend most of his time on the side-lines out injured.

This now means that Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has no need to sign a new player for that position leaving Manchester now free to pursue the 25-year-old French international with no fear of a bidding war with Arsenal.

The Red Devils have already made Southampton a concrete offer for Morgan Schneiderlin, but it fell £5 million short of the Saints asking price, and with the club flush financially still from sales last summer, they will be more than happy to see Schneiderlin remain at St Marys for another season, which means United must either pay their price or find a new defensive midfielder elsewhere.
