Despite having Theo Walcott back, and with Lukas Podolski not too far off fitness Arsenal are still in the market for a striker to help take the pressure off of Oliver Giroud.

A strong possibility is Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke who has already proved himself in the Premiership and could be signed for as little as £28 million.

It is however Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema that is being named as the man Wenger wants with Spanish sports newspaper MARCA saying that the Arsenal boss is in love with the French international.

What you must remember though is that Wenger is not a fan of the January transfer window, and remembers the time he got his fingers burnt back in January 2004 when he paid £17 million for Jose Antonio Reyes who turned out to be a flop.

So despite Wenger’s reluctance to spend midseason he will be prepared to act when the window opens as he knows that if he does not buy, and Arsenal slip away from their title challenge that questions will be asked as to why he did not bolster the squad when there were top talents available.

One option available to the Frenchman that would not backfire on him would be to forgot Benteke and Benzema and sign the less expensive Romania striker Ciprian Marica from Spanish club Getafe.
