As the summer transfer window enters it final weeks, report have come to light that Arsenal are trying to complete a double deal worth £28 million to bring in Olympiacos defender Kostas Manolas and Sporting Lisbon defensive midfielder William Carvalho.

Both players have been linked to Arsenal in recent weeks. While the speculation surrounding Kostas Manolas to Arsenal came to light last week, the links involving William Carvalho to Arsenal have been on going for most of the summer.

Kostas Manolas, a Greece international centre half who plies his trade with Olympiacos was reported to have had his medical at London Colney a few days ago, but it seems that report was wide of the mark as the player is believed to still to be in Athens.

However, it is believed that discussions are still on going between Arsenal and Olympiacos for the transfer of the defender.

William Carvalho has been in the news for most of the summer as he has constantly been linked to the club from different reports carried by Portuguese daily O jogo.

He was reported to have been watched by Arsenal scouts in a Portuguese league match between Academica and Sporting Lisbon last weekend.

What is not yet clear from the various reports involving the movement of these players to Arsenal is how close these transfers are to being completed.

This is against the backdrop of what Arsene Wenger said after the match against Besiktas, when he said that the club was not close to any signing. When asked on his transfer plans, he said.

“Not at the moment (whether he was close to completing a deal), no. I have nothing special to add on that at the moment. Honestly, we are not close to signing anybody.”

Although he does not give anything away when taking about transfers, he did mention after the Emirates Cup that he expects to be busy between 15th and 30th of August which covers the period towards the end of the transfer window. The transfer dealings of the club might depend on the final outcome of the Champions League play-offs when Arsenal takes to the field against Besiktas in the second leg on Wednesday 27 August at the Emirates.

What is clear though in respect of the report that the club is trying to complete a double deal for Kostas Manolas and William Carvalho is that they would be coming into positions that are in need of bodies. That is central defence and holding midfield. While some might want to throw in a striker into the mix, it is unlikely that Arsene Wenger would bring in another striker.
