If a report by daily star is anything to go by, Arsenal could be signing Michael Carrick this summer. It is reported that Wenger could sign him as an option for the Francis Coquelin in the defensive midfield position. The Gunners have already been linked to the signing of Swiss star Granit Xhaka but it appears Wenger will like to take advantage of Carrick’s contractual situation at Manchester United to bring the two times Premier league winner to the Emirates.

Considering Carrick is 34 already, many Arsenal fans will be surprised by this news, but anyone who knows the antecedents of Wenger, won’t find it strange to see him sign a player of Carrick’s status. Although, he doesn’t buy from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City, that cannot be said United – Having bought Mikael Silvestre in the summer of 2008 and, most recently, Danny Welbeck in 2014.

Carrick, 34, is set to leave Old Trafford on bosman when his contract terminates at the end of the current season. He has been tipped to join Everton or West Ham, but Arsenal are now consistently rumored to be in for his services.

The likes of Mikel Arteta, Mathieu Flamini and Tomas Rosicky are touted to be shown the exit door at the Emirates stadium, which is why it is a surprise to see Arsenal are been linked to Carrick who is also in the same age bracket as the soon to be released trio.

Wenger had once praised the player as the “new Viera” in 2006. Perhaps, he is finally found the chance to sign him. However, the fans will be hoping that this happens to be one of those transfer rumours that never happen.
