Arsenal is preparing a £32 million bid for Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels in the hope of snatching him from under Manchester United whose manager Louis van Gaal has the German international on a list of players he wants to sign for the Red Devils.

Dutchman van Gaal is desperate for a top-four finish his first year in charge at Old Trafford and thinks that signing the 25-year-old Hummels in January could help him achieve this.

Hummels however has spoken of his desire to play Champions League football alerting Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who has only two recognised centre-backs in his current squad.

The soon to be 65-year-old Frenchman is eager to play Hummels alongside Laurent Koscielny in the heart of the Gunners defence and is ready to splash the cash required during the January transfer window.

In the past Hummels has made it known that he is not interested in playing in the Premiership, but recently told the Daily Express that he could change his mind if the team played an attractive style of football saying: “If a club with a bigger reputation than Dortmund were to make a move, but I don’t like the way they play football, I wouldn’t even consider a move.

“At Dortmund, the style of play is exactly the way I want to play football.”
