Arsenal have stepped up their interest in Granit Xhaka by opening talks with Borussia Monchengladbach according to British daily tabloid the Mirror.

The Gunners have sent scouts to watch the Swiss international midfielder in action 30 times already this season and have now made an opening offer of £24 million for the 23-year-olds services.

Monchengladbach however are holding out for their valuation of the player which is £32 million eight million shy of the Gunners first bid.

Arsenal are convinced that there is a deal to be done and are confident that they will have Xhaka at the Emirates once the transfer window opens on July 1st.

Despite his young age Xhaka is renowned for his passing ability and his leadership on the pitch, two qualities Arsene Wenger admires as he seeks to replace Mathieu Flamini, Mikel Arteta and Tomas Rosicky with the 40 time capped Swiss star.

Meanwhile if a deal does go through it will make Xhaka the clubs third most expensive signing behind Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez.
