Arsenal, Sporting Lisbon

Arsenal has gone back to Sporting Lisbon with an offer of £20 million for holding midfielder William Carvalho according to the Daily Mail, despite pulling out of earlier talks when the Portuguese club said they valued Carvalho at £30 million.

With the Gunners through to the knockout stage of the Champions League where they will face French club Monaco in the first stage, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is eager to acquire a top holding midfielder and knows that the 22-year-old maybe the only one available in January.

Sporting was knocked out of the competition by Chelsea on December 10th, and although they are still involved in the Europa League may be willing to cash in on their star player.

The Gunners initial offer two months ago of £15 million was turned down by the Portuguese side, but negotiations ended on a friendly note encouraging Arsenal to go back with an improved offer.
