Arsenal have opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder Adrien Rabiot, according to reports in the French media.

The 19 year old has reportedly been given permission to speak to Arsenal with a fee of £6 million being the price that the Ligue 1 champions are asking for his services.

The 19 year old who does not turn 20 until next April is a French Under-21 international, and despite being in a star studded PSG team frost with fierce competition for places, he made a total of 23 league appearances last season.

Standing at 6ft 2in, he is an imposing midfielder that can add a much needed physical presence to Arsenal’s midfield.

And with just one year left on his current contract, the PSG hierarchy are willing do a deal in order to raise cash as a result of the spending and squad restrictions placed on them by UEFA for breaches of the Financial Fair Play rules.

If his signing is secured, he would be the second 19 year old that Arsene Wenger has signed this summer, and he would come in at a relative low fee, while Calum Chambers that arrived in July was signed for fee that could rise to £16 million.

What this means is that despite the calls from several quarters for Arsene Wenger to secure the services for a defensive midfielder, it seems that the Frenchman is planning for the future and and not just the events of the present.

The players that currently occupies that position in the Arsenal team are Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini, and both players are in their thirties.

The former has just one year left on his contract, and Flamini has two years in his contract.

By the time both these players leave Arsenal , Adrien Rabiot and Calum Chambers would be in their early twenties, which means that they would then have slotted into the team as main stay of the team.

Also, there is the little matter of Abou Diaby, who has just one year left on his contract like Mikel Arteta.

And if both these players leave the club in a years time, it means, Arsenal would be short of central midfielders, and the likely signing of Adrien Rabiot is Arsene Wenger already planning for the future, by using him as an understudy for the defensive midfield role, before he eventually takes over the role when Mikel Arteta leaves.

Arsene Wenger has ready said that he sees Calum Chambers as a defensive midfielder in the long term, and bringing in the French midfielder from PSG could be Arsene Wenger altering that position after seeing the former Saints defender’s performance in central defence since he joined Arsenal.

Whatever eventually comes out of this particular development involving the developing story from France involving Adrien Raboit, Arsene Wenger’s mind in respect of his plans for the player would only be discerned when he is signed.
