£50m?

Arsenal said to be interested in French striker

No, I don’t think so – regardless of what Montpellier say, nobody is going to pay that much money for a forward that has had a solitary season of good form in Ligue 1.

The Daily Mail are this morning insisting that Arsene Wenger ‘has instructed chief French scout Gilles Grimandi to compile a dossier on Montpellier striker Olivier Giroud’, and that the Arsenal manager is keen to bring the 25 year-old Frenchman to London.

I can see why there might be some interest – Giroud is a big and physical, everything that Arsenal are not, and everything that Marouane Chamakh has failed to provide – but he’s a player so unlike any other that Wenger has ever signed, and it would mark a huge change in transfer philosophy.

And, as for ‘Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin (saying) recently that it would cost at least £50million to prise Giroud away from France’, I’d be very wary of spending anything like half that amount of money on this guy.

He’s a £10m-£15m forward at best, and anything above is that is an enormous risk. Goal compilation videos can be deceptive, as we’re about to see…
