Arsenal has found a replacement for Thomas Vermaelen

Should Belgium defender Thomas Vermaelen ask to leave Arsenal in the summer the club is set to revive their interest in Swansea captain Ashley Williams who already had two meetings with the Gunners last summer says the Daily Mail.

The Welsh international has been the man the club has depended on since getting promoted to the premiership in 2011, and with 250 appearances since joining the club in 2008 there are plenty of emotional ties that will make it difficult to leave.

The 29-year-old central defender however may feel as though time is running out for him to win any major trophies and with his contract set to expire at the end of the season knows it could be his last big opportunity to move.

A move to the Emirates could have fell through  when manager Arsene Wenger had to commit £42.5 million for Mesut Özil  after promising fans that there would be a big name signing.

Should Vermaelen asks to leave Williams would provide a true and tested Premiership replacement that would almost certainly be embraced by Gooners who remember the great defensive teams of the past.
