Newcastle have reached agreement with Ajax over a £6.2million deal for Dutch international Vurnon Anita.

Anita's coming to Toon as versatile Ajax star jets in for medical after £6.2m fee agreed

Sportsmail were first to reveal the Toon’s interest in Anita, 23, who can play left-back or in midfield, when a £5m bid was turned down in July.

At the time, the player’s agent said: ‘There is serious interest from Newcastle. A move to the Premier League is so tempting for him. We have to resolve the situation quickly.’

Anita has three caps for Holland but was not selected in their Euro 2012 squad. He was a key part of Ajax’s title-winning side last season and coach Frank de Boer was keen to keep hold of him, having seen captain Jan Vertonghen already depart the club for Tottenham.

‘We’ll do all we can to try and keep Vurnon here. He’s a very valuable player,’ De Boer said in July.

He made his farewell appearance for Ajax on Sunday against AZ Alkmaar and is due for a medical at Newcastle on Monday.
