ANDRE SANTOS last night broke his silence on the Robin van Persie shirt storm to say SORRY to Arsenal fans.

The Brazilian left-back was slammed by supporters and boss Arsene Wenger for taking RVP’s shirt at half-time of Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Santos declared: “I’d like to apologise to supporters who felt aggrieved by it.

“Did I think it would cause such a commotion? Of course I didn’t, otherwise I would have told Robin to exchange the shirts away from public view.”

RVP angered Arsenal fans by making a controversial £22million switch from the Emirates to United in the summer.

Saturday’s game at Old Trafford was the first time the Dutchman had faced Arsenal in a United shirt — and he promptly scored after three minutes.

Boss Wenger yesterday said he had made it clear to Santos he was wrong and insisted the Brazilian would not make the same mistake again.

Wenger said: “I believe that was not the right thing to do at all.

“I don’t even understand it. It’s interesting because Santos is a player who cares.

“It’s about the result, about the team.

“That’s the difference of culture.

“I can understand that an English guy doesn’t understand it, I’m French and I don’t understand it either.

“He is completely in a different world when he does that.

“He cares and he understands today what it means and, believe me, he will never do it again.”
