Real Madrid trainer Carlo Ancelotti has revealed that it was him who convinced Portuguese defender Pepe to stay at the club.

Despite having defensive sensation Raphael Varane Pepe has remained a key figure for the Spanish giants racking up 47 first team starts since Ancelotti took over from Jose Mourinho at the Santiago Bernabeu.

And for a while it looked like Pepe would not sign a new contract with talk suggesting that he might be on his way to Manchester City only to have Ancelotti plead with him to stay.

Ancelotti told Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I have not used any strategy. He asked to leave because in Spain they considered him bad and dirty. I told him that he was going to stay, that I counted on him. We were not disappointed, just like [Cristiano] Ronaldo never disappoints us.”
