LINE-UP: Arsenal team to play Southampton

Arsenal are finding it difficult in convincing Mesut Ozil to extend his contract with the club. The 27-year-old current contract does not expire until the summer of 2018. However, the club is desperate for him to append his signature to a new contract but things appear to be turning sour.

A number of obstacles are reported in the way of a new deal. First being the attacker is insisting that his wage package tallies with his status as the club’s best player. Having created a premier league record of 122 chances this season and 18 assists already this season, he is inarguably one of the standout performers. He is insisting on an £180,000 a week deal, according to reports and I think he deserves such pay since even Theo Walcott command about £140,000 per week at the club.

Secondly, the Gunners are currently wobbling in the top four race and they are at risk of having fifth-placed Manchester United replace them in the last Champions League spot. Thus the German International is waiting until the club qualifies for the UEFA Champions League, which may include the play-off, before he agrees to a new contract.

Lastly, he alongside Alexis Sanchez is, reportedly, insisting they know the manager’s transfer plans before they extend their contract with the club. The last time that happened we all know how Robin Van Persie eventually left the club after questioning Wenger transfer decision.

The fans will be hoping that the assist king remains at the club, as they would never want their £42.5 marquee signing leave the club without winning major trophies with/for them.
